If you want it, you can have it

If you’re willing to pay the price,
any of your circumstances will change.
If you want something badly enough,
you’re sure to get it.
The key to success is desire.

Obstacles don’t matter very much.
Pain, circumstances or other challenges can be there.
But if you want to do something bad enough,
you’ll find a way to get it done.

Your desire will in time externalize itself into concrete fact.
Your reality will form around your commitment to succeed.

You only have to love a thing greatly to get it.
Desire is the fire of life.

This really resonated with me this morning, as I am trying to work on a few things for my business. I’m not the best at goal-setting, but I normally have a pretty good idea of where I want to go in life. I definitely have the desire!

And yes, Mom, it’s from “The Guru”!!! :)

Six Degrees

Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon

Most of you are probably familiar with the concept of Six Degrees — or more familiar with the game, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. The theory goes that any actor or actress is only six “degrees” away from Kevin Bacon.

Take one of my favorite actresses, Drew Barrymore, for instance … she was in The Wedding Singer with Adam Sandler, who was in Anger Management with Jack Nicholson, who was in A Few Good Men with Kevin Bacon. Three degrees.

That’s pretty easy, but what about someone like Clark Gable? Well, he was in The Misfits with Marilyn Monroe, who was in Something’s Got to Give with Dean Martin, who was in Cannonball Run II with Burt Reynolds, who was in Starting Over with — yes — Kevin Bacon! Four degrees from Clark Gable to Kevin Bacon!

I hope that convinces you of the power of Six Degress!

Six Degrees of Ali Edwards

Kevin embraced the “Six Degrees” idea and created SixDegrees.org — a website that allows you to contribute to a number of different charitable organizations. Not only that, but it encourages you to make “badges” that you can post on your own website to show people how much money you have raised for your favorite charities, etc.

So, our friend Ali has been hard at work on this Six Degrees concept…

Pause for gratuitous wedding photos of Ali….

Ali and Carrie

Ali and Brad

OK — back to regular blogging now.

Ali and Chris‘ son, Simon, has autism. So, it’s easy to understand why she has been putting forth a huge effort to raise money for Autism Speaks — a non-profit dedicated to autism research, treatment, and prevention.

Now, I’m sure that all of us have raised money for one cause or the other, but how many of us have been mentioned by Kevin Bacon on national TV? Check out this clip…

Yes, the “woman from Oregon” that Kevin refers to (on the Ellen show) is Ali!

Awesome.

The cool thing is that right now Ali is leading the charge on Kevin’s website — in second place of all fundraising efforts! At the end of this month the person with the top number of donations will receive an extra $10,000 towards their charity! Nice!!!

Note that it is not the dollar amount that is being totaled, but the total number of donations that counts.

Six Degrees of You

So, here’s what you need to do… Click here and give to Autism Speaks — the minimum donation is $10 — and it could really help propel Ali into first place as she is only about 20 donations behind. Donating is very easy, you can place the donation on your credit card or draft from your bank … and it is tax deductible!

I encourage you to go donate NOW — don’t wait … it will only take five minutes, if that!

March Madness!

The “NCAAs”

This past weekend — specifically Thursday through Sunday — kicked off the greatest sporting event of all time — the NCAA Basketball Tournament! In four days, 64 teams (one having already won the “play-in” game) square off to compete for the national championship. Neither conference championships, tournament seedings, nor national rankings matter anymore — you have to win in order to keep moving towards the Final Four and, hopefully, the national championship game.

I had long wanted to take Thursday and Friday off — have some people over — and basically do nothing but watch basketball, hang out, drink beer, and (of course) play poker for the course of the two initial days as 64 teams get whittled down to 32 (and then to 16 on Saturday and Sunday). I had already mentioned this to a few people and several had said that they were in for an all-day NCAA-fest on Friday.

The Madness Begins

Flashback to the previous Saturday… I was over at Tara’s playing in the HLPD game (Harper’s Landing Poker Degenerates) — the original group that I started playing poker with — scary! We hadn’t gotten together in a while — in fact, this was only the second or third time in about the last six months! So, I was settling in for a nice session of Tara, Marty, and others donking their money off to me when I got a call from Carrie.

Carrie needed “Technical Support” for the TV — how to change it to a certain TiVo or something (yes, we have multiple TiVos, doesn’t everybody?) I helped her out and she was set to go — settled in to catch up on some of her shows from the previous week.

Then my phone rang again. Carrie.

This time it wasn’t about a TiVo or anything like that — the picture, “Looked funny”. That does not bode well. And it certainly wasn’t anything that I could fix over the phone or, likely, at all. So, Carrie was resigned to watching the smaller TV in the bedroom.

When I got home that night, I confirmed my worst fears… Carrie had broken my TV!!!!

OK, well, she hadn’t broken it, but I wasn’t going to tell her that … at least until I had convinced her to buy me a new one!

And what timing! The Saturday before the NCAA Tournament starts on Thursday! I had basketball to watch and people were expecting an all-day hoops event later in the week — I couldn’t let them down!

An Underdog Story

Old Mitsubishi TVI purchased my last TV — a Mitsubishi 55″ big screen about nine years ago. I remember because it was right after I had left Compaq to start consulting — the home theater setup, complete with Denon receiver, B&W speakers, etc., all from the Home Theater Store, was a little reward to myself! The TV had lasted quite a while — needing repair only once (while it was still under a 5-year warranty), but had seemed to run its course. The receiver and speakers are still going strong though! :)

Now I faced the proposition of purchasing a new TV within the next couple of days! Not only that, but I needed to get an HD TiVo (you can’t watch sports without TiVo, trust me!), get all that setup, and make sure that it was working before the end of the week! If I could get it done, it would be a true Cinderella story!

A lot has changed in the last nine years too — there’s HDTV, plasmas, LCDs, and all sorts of new technology. So, I did some research and decided that plasma was the way to go. I’d heard all the rumors about burn-in and such on plasmas, but fortunately some reading up on the subject alleviated my fears — those issues have pretty much been solved on all new TVs.

While I was researching up on plasmas I put in a last-second bid on an HD DirecTiVo on eBay — the seller was in Longview, so I hoped that I would be able to get it shipped to me in time for Thursday’s games so that I could enjoy the March Madness package which gives you ALL the games! Sweet! I won the bid, send off the payment via PayPal, and noted to the seller to please ship tomorrow so that I would receive it in time for my hoops!

Panasonic 50" PlasmaIn the meantime, I had pretty much decided that I was getting the Panasonic 50″ plasma. It had great reviews and its own thread on the AVS Forum exposing its greatness!

The TV was listed on Amazon for a great price — $1759 with free shipping — however, the free shipping wasn’t 2nd day air like a normally get … it was “freight”, which means weeks. So, I had to look elsewhere. Monday I took a quick trip over to Circuit City and checked out the TV — great picture and looked very cool. They had an HD signal hooked up to it, of course, and appropriately enough, all of the televisions were showing basketball highlights from this past season, in preparation for the tournament.

Unfortunately, Circuit City was selling it for $1999 — not exactly a bargain. Plus, I’d have to pay tax and a delivery charge. This is the part of the story where I tell you that I used my master negotiating, Jedi mind trick skills to talk the Circuit City guy into letting me walk out of there with my new plasma for a cool fifteen grand. Oh, and with delivery included. NOT.

Me asking for a discount was similar to Tommy Boy asking Helen the waitress if she would check to see if the kitchen was really closed so that he could get some chicken wings. “Hmm… Let me check. Yeah, it’s closed.”

So, I left the store to consider my options. I stopped by Sam’s to look at what they had to offer as well as Best Buy. Then I went back home and looked up some of the other TVs I had seen — none of them had the reviews that the “Panny” did. Confident that I was making the right choice, I went ahead and placed an order with CircuitCity.com — their website shows free delivery (although the Circuit City guy told me they would charge $50!) AND they would take away your old TV! That was worth the difference in price right there, as I had NO idea how I was going to get the broken behemoth down from the third floor as getting it UP there had taken three movers and me!!

The Game Winner

The delivery guys showed up late Wednesday night — around 5:30pm. I had already ordered a wall mount and had been by Home Depot (yes, Brendan, HOME DEPOT — that makes two trips in a year … I am on course to set a record!) to ensure that I had the proper tools to hang our new plasma on the wall. (Note the subtle change to plural pronouns)

The two delivery guys got the plasma upstairs without a problem — it’s just a tad over 90 pounds. I’m not sure how much the old Mitsubishi weighs, but it is significantly more! It’s also almost five feet tall, four feet wide, and two feet deep!! The delivery guys definitely earned their keep that evening. After they were done — and I say they because I barely helped as I seemed to be more in the way than useful — I made sure to thank them for their extra efforts. Andrew Jackson thanked each of them as well — somewhat out of generosity, but also to assuage my guilt from having watched these guys almost break their backs carrying out that monstrosity!

I worked for the next 3-4 hours getting everything setup — measuring several times before finally drilling holes for the wall mount, just to make sure that it was perfect. I had already hooked up the TV to the new TiVo, phoned DirecTV to get the HD signal working correctly, and shown off our new set to Carrie — she thought it was cool!

After all was said and done it looks awesome hanging on our wall! And gives us more than two feet of room space — really opening up the room! Cool! Here’s how it looks…

The new plasma!
That photo doesn’t really do the TV justice (it was hard to get a photo with the room lighting and TV picture showing correctly) … The one below looks a little better. Note that the holes in the wall on the left were from before, when a huge TV was covering them up. The hole for the speaker wires will be plastered over soon and I’ll wire it up a little more cleanly (Brendan has already volunteered to assist with this project — he is quite the handyman, just ask Julia!)
The new plasma #2
Brendan (and Derek, if you are reading) — you may want to print out this photo as it shows Duke ahead in their first round game against VCU (unfortunately for them, and Duke fans everywhere, they would go on to be upset by VCU). I’ve got to say hi and “Congrats!” to my cousin Melanie who works at VCU — she and her husband are huge fans and I’m sure they enjoyed watching the game!

The “Hoops and Hold ‘Em” was a great success! Neither Carrie, nor I, nor many others could figure out how we ever watched the tournament in standard definition!!! Carrie didn’t think that there would be that much of a difference, but was really wowed when I showed her the HD feed — and could wait to watch Lost and some of our other favorite shows on it!

Thanks to all that came out on Thursday (after prompting from Eric Erickson to get a game going) and Friday (the originally scheduled get-together). Enjoyed it!!!

The Overtime Victory!

I’ve been looking around for some audio shelving to hold my receiver, TiVos, DVD player, etc. Right now it is situated on the counter on the bar that we had installed on the third floor, to eventually finish out and make into a nice popcorn and drinks area. So, I was checking out Best Buy and Circuit City’s websites and noticed that Circuit City had a big ad on their home page about savings on select TVs. No way I could be this lucky.

Sure enough, I checked the page with our new plasma and the price was right there: $1999. Except it wasn’t $1999. It was $1999 — the price was struck out along with a note that said, “See sale price in cart”. This is a little gimmick that some online sites use to get you to add an item to your cart in order to see their “low, low sale price” — I’m sure some marketing genius has figure out that it leads to more sales.

The bar fridgeWell, I was happy to add the item to my cart because it meant that the price was going to be lower than the $1999 listed on the product page. I added it to the cart and it showed up instantly … $1799!

Helloooooooooo price guarantee!!!

I printed out my receipt and took the information to my local store (they make you go to the store in order to get the price match — even if you ordered online. Sneaky!). Within five minutes I had my $215 credit ($200 plus tax) — Woohoo!!!!

It’s enough to pay for the bar fridge that’s being delivered later this week, so I’d say that works out perfectly!

Chip and a chair

Make that many chips and many chairs — enough to host some serious poker games!

I bought a handmade poker table from an Anadonkian that was moving to Denver … Somehow I convinced him that he really didn’t want to move the table all that way and that he should sell it to me instead! Nice! The table is pretty sweet — using a burnt orange (perfect!) felt, with a padded rail around the whole table, and wide cup holders — large enough to accommodate the beverage of your choice, even when using a koozie.

I purchased some nice padded folding chairs to go with the table — they have a 2″ cushion as well as a back cushion … comfortable enough for long poker sessions! After they were delivered I found out that they are teflon coated, so the inevitable stains will be easy to remove! Cool!

Here’s the new setup — pretty sweet!!!

Brad's Poker Room

I’ve been needing some chips and chairs to go with it though! I have some chips that my parents gave me for Christmas a while back and those have served me well, but I’ve been wanted to get some personalized ones for a while.

I purchased a set of Nexgen Edge Spot Series 2 chips from Mr. Poker Chips — they handled everything perfectly! Here’s how the new chips look…
Side view of poker chips

I pretty much went with the standard colors that you would find in casinos … $1 — white, $5 — red, etc. The only bad thing is that they were out of blue chips (which are normally $10), but I have some coming on backorder! :)

Denominations of Poker Chips

The denominations are very helpful to Royce when he is playing … One late night pokerfest involved the following conversation repeated over and over….

Royce: “What are these again?” (Pointing to the chips, asking how much they are worth).

Brendan or I would then explain the denominations.

No less than two hands later….

Royce: “OK, you guys are going to laugh, but what are these worth? No one has told me!!!”

Royce may or may not have been drinking that night.

Side view of poker chips

Cool side view of the chips … The high denomination chips are for tournaments — although I expect that the $100s might make it into a cash game one day this year — we’ll have to see!!!

Pile of $1 poker chips

I like this photo — very cool!

Special thanks to JFLO for stopping by last night to help me break in the chips and table! Our heads-up session lasted an hour and a half or so — long enough for JFLO to have to buy back in three or four times (I lost count) … Can you say PWNAGE??? Thanks for helping me to pay for the chips JFLO!!! :)

My father’s son

I just did something I never thought I’d do … put speakers in my bathroom. Well, not like the cool in-ceiling speakers (I wish we had done that in our master bath — we have them downstairs and in the master bedroom), but regular speakers!

I enjoy jamming out to some of my favorite tunes when taking a shower and getting ready and sometimes I would bring my iPod in the bathroom with me. I have an old portable radio/CD player that I would use, along with a Belkin FM transmitter, to play my iPod — quite a process!

The biggest issue was that I’d leave the radio out and Carrie, woman that she is, would put it away under a cabinet somewhere (usually where I couldn’t find it) so that the bathroom would look “nice”. Guys don’t care about the bathroom (or any other room, for that matter) being “nice” — we just want it to be functional and “cool”! We’d climb over boxes and wires if it meant that we could watch ESPN in HD while shaving or play video games while we shower. That’s just how we roll.

Bathroom Speakers

As a side note, my Macbook Pro is in the shop! It mainly needs a new keyboard — the keys L, O and P on the notebook stopped working (although my external keyboard still worked fine). You’d be surprised how words use those letters! While I’m getting my keyboard replaced I’m getting a new logic board which is supposed to fix a minor video problem (I couldn’t be bothered to take it in just for that, so I’ve just been putting it off).

So, since I am mostly computer-less for the day (with the exception of my Mac Mini, that I am currently using to blog and avoid internet withdrawal) I’m cleaning out my office. It’s a painful process since I am easily distracted (Hey, a quarter!) — and when I ran across my old PC speakers I decided that I could put them to good use. Thus, the new sound system on my bathroom sink — kind of Bose-ish, don’t you think?

Bathroom Speakers - Under the cabinet

After hooking the speakers and subwoofer up (doesn’t everyone need a subwoofer in their bathroom?!) I hooked up my “old school” iPod to give it a test run. Yes - that is a first generation iPod - a Christmas gift from Carrie many moons ago! I had loaned it to Aaron for a while and he has since gotten his very own and given me this one back. I hooked it up to my Mac a few weeks ago, reformatted it for Mac (it was originally a Windows iPod), synced some songs, and it was ready to go. Yes, my top five made it on there!

As I was listening to my gangsta rap and congratulating myself on such an engineering feat, I realized something… This is exactly something that my father would have done! In fact, something he has done - although, his speakers are generally much bigger. The best way to explain how much of an audiophile my dad is probably to tell you that one time when we moved into a new house he had to have extra power run to a certain room in order to power his speakers!

And yes, mom, that is my electric shaver under the sink — now that there is an extension cord there — just like my dad used to do! Isn’t it funny the things that you remember? I’m not really motivated at the moment to install an extra outlet down there, but possibly one day!

I do have to say that I showed some restraint … I didn’t hook up the surround sound!
