Where have you traveled?

I ran across this website today that allows you to create a map of the world highlighting countries that you have visited. They also have one for states – pretty cool. Below is the map that I created of places that I have lived or visited.

After looking at this map there are definitely some more places in the world that I want to travel to. I was fortunate to spend some of my time growing up overseas – in Norway, England, and the Netherlands – so that is why much of Europe is red. But there are still a lot of countries – and even continents that I haven’t been to yet!

One place that is definitely on my list is Australia – I’ve always wanted to go there. So, maybe around this time next year?

Just do it!

Yesterday I received something in the mail that I have been waiting on a long time. My diploma my master’s degree! I completed my Master’s in Computer Information Technology at Regis University back in August of last year. However, due to my negligence in handling my paperwork, I didn’t officially graduate until December, and it has taken them until now to get the diploma to me! Anyway, that is not the point of this post.

DiplomaIt only took me about a year and a half to complete the degree. However, that year and a half was spread out over almost three years! See, I started taking classes back in the Fall of 2001 – two classes every eight weeks. But then one eight-week session I decided that I was too busy and that I would hold off on taking classes until the next session. Two months later I came up with a new excuse of why that session wouldn’t work well either. And so it continued until 2004!

Finally, in the midst of basketball season – arguably the busiest time of my year – I decided that I was sick of putting it off. I took an “it’s now or never” approach and signed up for two classes which started in January. It was definitely a busy time – when not officiating basketball games, I was pretty much in front of the computer programming or writing papers – or my thesis, ugh!

But, when August came it was worth it. I had completed 24 hours that year which, in addition to the 8 I had earned earlier, fulfilled the requirements for my degree. I had also finished my thesis – which was an accomplishment in itself that took many weeks of work. But at the end of August I was done. And, looking back, it really hadn’t been that bad.

The time to pursue your dreams is now! Not tomorrow, or the next day, or next year. Whether we think it or not, we will probably not have any more time, money, or energy than we do right now. So, if you have been putting off following your dreams or pursuing something that you really want – it’s time to step up to the plate and just do it! The difference between achieving what you want out of life or spending the rest of it wishing and wanting could very well be the decision that you make today.

Jen’s Birthday Party

If a picture’s worth a thousand words, here’s the photo collage equipvalent of 20,000 words — at least as many as it would take to describe what an incredible surprise birthday party that John threw his girlfriend Jen this past Saturday. There is no substitute for friends that you are comfortable enough around to just be yourself. Without friendships like these life would certainly be much more boring. Plus, dances such as “The Lawnmower” and “The Ref” would never be invented!

Couple pics from Isla Mujeres

Although we do have over a thousand photos from our Isla Mujeres vacation, we have fewer than a dozen of the two of us together! Such is the problem when you go on vacation by yourself – lots of pictures of each other, but not very many together. We did manage to ask a few kind strangers to take our photo though, so I thought that I would share. Note that the one in the upper-left is the only “pre-engagement” photo!  Look how happy Carrie is… Little did she know!

Also, I’m sure that you have noticed the banner photos at the top of this site… Just random photos that I (or sometimes Carrie or a friend) have taken. I’ve added a little camera icon near the top of the page. Simply hover over the camera icon to see information about that picture – when and where it was taken, by whom, and the camera settings… Pretty cool!

Finally, I have to say that it’s really nice that Carrie has linked to me 3 out of her last 5 posts. What a compliment! I definitely enjoy seeing her responses to things that I write down and really enjoy when she posts some of her insight – as I know others do as well.

Did I mention that we got engaged…

We have a ton of photos from vacation. Well, a little over a thousand to be exact! I did a little calculation and figured that we had taken the equivalent of over 50 rolls of film! Wow!

Of course, that is the incredible thing about digital cameras – especially when you take your notebook along with you  – just fill up the camera with photos, download to your notebook, and start fresh the next day! Carrie and I really enjoy photography and had fun looking through the photos from each day.

Since we have so many photos, it seemed impractical to post them individually here – that would take too long. So, I came up with a little photo collage technique so that I could post several at a time…

After getting our email from Isla Mujeres announcing our engagement (the photo series on Carrie’s blog) one of my friends commented tongue-in-cheek, “You should have gotten more pictures of the ring.” My reply, “Oh, don’t worry – we did!”

So, below, in all of her freshley engaged glory, is the lovely Carrie (soon-to-be-Batt) Colbert! I have to let you all know that Carrie didn’t walk around holding her left hand out with her mouth open all of the time we were in Mexico – just a considerable amount of it. Say, somewhere between 85–90% of her waking hours.

It was actually quite amazing to watch Carrie in action — all of a sudden she would point or eat with her left hand, even though all of these years she has been right handed. She also became a master of the engagement segue… For example, when asking for beach towels, she might say, “Can we have some beach towels? Thank you so much… Did I mention to you that we got engaged?!?” or the waiter might come by and ask, “Can I get you anything?” and Carrie would perk up and say, “What? You want to see my ring? You know we got engaged, right?!” Very smooth.

On Sunday night (not quite 48–hours of being engaged), we were sitting on the beach enjoying the sunset – very near the place where I had proposed. They had dinner on the beach set up for another couple (copycat b*stards!) and the couple was just coming out onto the beach — and the girl was “Ahh-ing” — as we were leaving. Well, I was leaving — Carrie was making a beeline straight for them to let them know – yes – that we had had dinner on this exact same beach a few nights ago and we got engaged!!! All this while I pretended not to know her.

As we went up the stairs to our room I lovingly whispered to Carrie, “What the hell were you doing?” and her only reply was an embarrassed, “I don’t know! I don’t know!”

We crossed paths with that same couple the next morning – although Carrie now tried to avoid them, slightly embarrassed for interrupting their little beach dinner. We discovered that they also had in fact gotten engaged that night. Of course, the guy really didn’t have a choice, did he?
