Texas All-Star Game, Sushi, and Vegas

Got the chance this past Monday to work the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star game. It was basically a volunteer position, although I was asked to do it by our local chapter. The game was in San Antonio and I did get a watch and a plaque! Woohoo!!!

Texas All-Star Basketball Official

Went from San Antonio on Monday to Vegas to officiate a little out here and help my friend Rich Almstedt celebrate his 60th birthday! Rich was the guy that first taught me about officiating at a clinic that I attended at Humble High School back in 1995. We have become good friends over the years and he has helped my career in many ways. Was also out here with Steve Oakes, a good friend and groomsman in our wedding. He assigns several tournaments out here over the summer, so I got to work a few games and subsidize my trip out here and had a free room for the last couple of nights! :)

We went out for all-you-can-eat sushi the other night… First time I had ever tried the raw sushi — it was really good… We tried Octopus, Eel, Yellowtail, and lots of other things — and threw in a few cooked items for good measure.

Derek is finishing up his bar exam today and then he and Brendan are headed out here for the real Vegas trip! I just beat them by a couple of days :)

And, yeah, I suck at blogging, but started a Twitter profile and have been updating that a little… Kind of cool… Not sure if I will stick with it, but will try it out for a while, so check it out.

Officiating in April, Spring Cleaning, and the Bluebonnet Festival

It’s been “stale” around here for quite a while, so time to update … I’ll try to do a better job for the rest of this month! Lots of fun stuff going on…

2008 Alamodome - Final Four
Worked the All-Star game in San Antonio the Friday night before the Final Four. This was the first year that they played the game on the Final Four court, which was pretty cool. It was open to the public and there were plenty in attendance. And, yes, for the rest of the weekend while watching the Final Four games with Brendan I did make comments like, “Have you refereed on that court? No? So it’s only me then?” much to his annoyance! LOL
College All-Star Game Officials

Yes … “big time” nationally televised game and they spell my name wrong! How do you misspell “Batt”?!?! Ah well … at least I got top billing! (Yeah, yeah, alphabetical order and all, but still…)
Messy office
I was totally sick of my office — it was a complete disaster, so I decided to take a day and clean things up and reorganize.
Clean office!
Love the results! I moved my desk, put all sorts of wires and electronics in my desk out of sight, and now I can OPEN my windows — what a concept!

And, yes, I have been playing piano quite a bit … Almost have Moonlight Sonata down - maybe 80% - I’ll post something on that soon.
Samantha on a pony
We went to Chappell Hill this past weekend for the Bluebonnet festival. One of my parents neighbors puts on a huge party for this with pony rides and all sorts of other activities… Here’s my niece Samantha on a pony! Fun fun!
Alyssa on a pony
Alyssa joining in the pony ride fun as well.
Alyssa holding an armadillo
Yes, there were armadillos! And armadillo races as well. I’m really hoping that those were chicken fajitas that we ate!
The Batt family in the bluebonnets
The Batt family posing for the requisite bluebonnet pics. We took a ton of bluebonnet photos. Richele and Mike brought two other couples with them, so there was a lot of picture time!

A Kim Haynes inspired jumping photo - so much fun!

Waterway Arts Festival
We went to the Waterway Arts Festival on Sunday - although we didn’t take a whole bunch of pictures! We visit this every year and they always do a great job of putting on the show with live musicians, food from local restaurants, etc. We didn’t find anything that really caught our fancy this year, so we walked away empty handed, but we have bought some fun pieces in years past.

That’s all for now … will try to update more often!

A few weeks in photos

March is almost over … How did that happen? It’s almost the March Madness, the best time of the year in sports - Brendan and agree, we can’t both be wrong! More on that later and something really exciting related to that later in this post!

For now, here are some pics from the past few weeks…

Brendan and Mike hanging out after eating some gumbo

We celebrated my dad’s birthday in Chappell Hill … Brendan was kid-free for the weekend and on a whim decided to come up and crash the party!

Richele, Maura, and Natalie

We had fun hanging out with Maura — an old family friend and our former babysitter!
Too much Korbel!

We all imbibed a few too many bottles of champagne - after having a wine tasting! We had a pretty good time and probably finally crashed around 1 or 2, which didn’t work so well for me since I had to be up at 8am to get on the road for my game!

Note that there is video from the birthday party and I will be sure to post shortly!
Carrie and Granny Rita

Carrie and I enjoyed a visit from Granny Rita. Kelli came up and we all went to dinner together — it’s a rare treat to enjoy the company of three Colbert women at once!
Easter brunch with Johnny and Natalie

We went to Fellowship for their Easter service and then to brunch at the Marriott afterwards. Both were awesome!
Carrie Hook Em!

This past weekend Carrie and I headed to Reliant to watch the Longhorns in the NCAA South Regional. Friday night was Texas vs Stanford, which Texas won fairly easily. We also stayed for the first half of the Memphis vs Michigan State game, leaving early after Memphis established a 50-20 lead!
Brad and Carrie at the 2008 NCAA South Regionals

With about forty thousand in attendance, there was a ton of burnt orange everywhere!

Our tickets!

We had some sweet seats — 20th row!!
JFLO and Carrie at the regionals

JFLO decided to join us at the last minute — he had just flown in from a work trip. He has a ton of photos from the games posted here and here.

OK, so enough photos and on to the exciting news…

This Friday evening, the day before the Final Four, I’m going to be working the DiGiorno College All-Star Game in San Antonio! The All-Star game is two teams made of seniors from across the country. For the first time this year the event is going to be played on the Final Four court at the Alamodome and will be free and open to the public! Cool!!!

I’m really looking forward to this game. It should be a fun and relaxing atmosphere. Carrie and I went to the San Antonio regional five years ago and I had been one time before that — both times were amazing. I’m sure the Final Four atmosphere will be even more intense! Hopefully we’ll have a good crowd come out for Friday night’s game!

So, I suppose my season will finally end this Friday, even though I have not worked the last couple of weeks! Hopefully down the road I will be working this late in the season in the actual tournament … along with my friends Brendan, JFLO, and others…

End of the season … almost

I was just about to put this bag away until November … or at least for a few months until camp.

Referee bag
Brendan and I just worked out last regular season college game this past Tuesday — and we worked it together! Cool! We actually received quite a few assignments together this season and I was grateful for it — our road trips are always fun!! :) However, on Thursday I received a call from our college coordinator and received my first college post-season assignment. Sweet!!!

I’m working at Kilgore College on Saturday afternoon … so it will be an early morning for me on Saturday, especially since my Dad’s birthday party is tomorrow night! Guess I will not be able to party it up too much in Chappell Hill!

Tulsa

JFLO accompanied me up to Tulsa for my game at Oral Roberts. The game went well — the coordinator of officials was there and it was the first time that he had ever seen me officiate, so that is a good thing! Great atmosphere at Oral Roberts — they put on a heck of a show for their basketball games. Scott Sutton is the coach — son of Eddie Sutton, retired OSU head coach, who was also in attendance (I know my mother-in-law Mindy will appreciate that tidbit!)

JFLO and I hit the Pappadeaux’s lunch buffet in Bush’s Terminal E before our flight.

Img 0170

We went up a day early and may or may not have gone straight to the poker room at the Cherokee Casino :)

The Scotty Nguyen Poker Challenge IV was going on and it was day 3 of the big $5000 buy-in tournament. They were down to the final two tables when we got there and there were several recognizable faces (if you watch poker on TV anyway). That’s Todd Brunson in the black jacket at the table there — unfortunately, he busted out before the final 9, which is all that paid in the 164 entrant tourney!

Img 0172

JFLO at the table sportin’ the iPod!

Img 0174

That’s Scotty Nguyen playing in his own tournament — nice! He busted out 4th or 5th… I took this photo from the seat where John and I were playing $1/2.

Img 0175

An 8-way chopped pot!!! Everyone checked the A 10 10 flop, the 6 on the turn and the 6 on the river… A $2 would have taken it down, but apparently we were all scared! Yeah — that is my 5 3 of clubs there and JFLO’s Q 5 on the right — you see the kind of crappy hands he plays! :)

Img 0177

Another photo of one of the final two tables — that is Gavin Smith in the blue baseball cap just to the right of the dealer. He does well in a LOT of tournaments and you may have seen him in KFC commercials during the WSOP broadcasts.

Img 0180

Was taking a photo of the table when the dealer was dealing cards to me — I thought this photo came out cool!

Img 0181

My chip stack midway through the night — after buying in for only $100! Woohoo!!!

Img 0183

This dealer looks like fellow poker degenerate (and often times, host) Jason Perkins — so we had to take a photo. The next night we showed Seth (Jason’s doppelganger) a photo of Jason, along with the rest of the table, and we were laughing about how it looked like him. A few hands later Seth said, “That dude really does look like me!” — LOL!!! And, yes, I used the word “doppelganger” at the table.

Img 0184

The final table — the guy in the baseball cap on the right is Ray Henson from Houston. He is not a “famous” poker player, but placed 12th in this years main event. He went on to get 2nd to TJ Cloutier in this tournament for a $120K payday. Nice!!!

Img 0200-1

TJ and Ray heads-up … with $300K on the table! Sweet!

Img 0186

Took this photo and emailed it to fellow poker player John as he was hamming it up at the table. He bet and it was obvious (to me) that he had a good hand. I think that he thought the other guy was going to fold, so went into this little act — it ended up working and the guy called with a worse hand. I mostly stayed away from this guy — he was a solid player that knew what was going on in the game. He built up a $100-200 stack to about $1200 over the course of the evening!

Also, note the chips in front of the guy in the blue shirt, because I had ALL of them a few hands later when he stacked off on a Q 10 9 x board to my pocket jacks, calling my all-in on the turn with a 10 7 — pair and a gutshot. Nice hand, sir! :)

Img 0187

My stack a little later in the night — with my “lucky Scotty” chips on top. That is JFLO’s pitiful stack behind the drinks.

Img 0196

Day two of poker… JFLO orders a brownie AND a cookie. The waitress brings over the largest brownie ever known to mankind!! I took a photo, but had to take another with a poker chip for reference so that you could see how huge this thing was!!! Yes, he ate the whole thing!
